The success of the R Type Continental between 1952 and 1955 lead to the creation of the S1 Continental chassis, which was released in April of 1955. For the first time Bentley enthusiasts had a greater choice of coachwork designs to choose from with H.J. Mulliner and Park Ward responsible for bodying the majority of the 431 S1 Continentals produced. One of the most popular designs was the fastback coachwork by H.J. Mulliner, design number 7400. It was modified to fit the 3 inch longer S1 Continental chassis and in styling terms was adapted further from the R Type Continental with a raised front wing line and less bulbous rear wings with a higher line which were finished with stylish new swage lines. Chassis number BC49AF is one of just one hundred and twenty three right hand drive all aluminium bodied S1 Continental Fastback抯 built between 1955 and 1959.
STANDARD EQUIPMENT Four speed automatic gearbox, Power Steering, 6 cylinder in-line configuration engine, 4.9 litres displacement, 4887cc capacity. Drum brakes servo-assisted.
OPTIONAL EXTRAS It has been retrospectively fitted with power steering using genuine factory parts and also features the dual braking system. Air conditioning is another excellent addition to this fine motor car with cool air ducted from two vents situated on the rear parcel shelf. BC49AF underwent a high quality cosmetic restoration six years ago, being re-painted, having the woodwork removed and re-veneered to a very high standard. A great deal of re-chroming work was carried out and finally the interior was re-trimmed by Frank Dale & Stepsons. A Modern Hi Fi was also fitted into the glove compartment, retaining the correct period look of the dashboard whilst improving the sound quality to modern day standards. It comes complete with all of its tools secured in the usual location in the boot compartment. BC49AF is an excellent example of this much sought after model and is one we are very pleased to be able to offer for sale. She is currently being inspected and serviced to our exacting standards, as well as being having new carpeting fitted and being fully detailed. She should be available for viewing in the new year.
