Iconic Aston Martin racers to show at Shelsy Walsh Hillclimb
14/08/2013

The famous Shelsley Walsh Hill Climb will be hosting a spectacular array of iconic Aston Martin racers from the world of Le Mans and road cars from the very earliest to the latest over the weekend of 17th and 18th August.

Set to wow the crowds will be the 2009 Lola Aston Martin DBR1/2 which will be doing a parade run at lunchtime after the timeline parade of Aston Martins organised by the Aston Martin Owners Club.

Carrying out demonstration runs and just confirmed will be the Aston Martin Rapide S, adapted for racing in the Nurburgring 24h race. It features a special bi-fuel Hydrogen/ petrol twin turbo 6.0 litre V12 developed by Aston Martin in conjunction with Austrian Hydrogen internal combustion engine specialists Alset GmbH. It is the first ever race car to be approved by the FIA to run on hydrogen. Also taking part in demonstration runs will be the historic LM10 that competed at Le Mans in the 1930s and at Shelsley, the DB2 "VMF65" from Le Mans to the current British GT racing Aston Martin V8 Vantage from Complete Racing, and a GT4 from Generation AMR.

On static display in the The Courtyard will be the Nimrod Aston Martin, AMR1, the DBR9 GT1 and the current GTE World Endurance racer. A great opportunity to see these stunning cars in the tranquillity of the Teme Valley. The Aston Martin AMR-ONE that competed at Le Mans in 2011 and the last foray in the LMP class from the factory before it switched its attention to the GT class, will also be on display in the paddock, this will be only the second time the car has been seen.

The paddock will be the home to a competition class including the 1951 DB2 that George Abecassis raced at Shelsley after he had raced at Le Mans that same year. This will be the first time the car has taken to the hill in 51 years.

A 30 car timeline parade will take place each day, including the famous DB4 GT Zagato "1 VEV", LM10, and a variety of different models from throughout the years right up to the latest cars from Stratstone Aston Martin which will also form part of the parade as well as being displayed in the cottage grounds overlooking the start line.

The Aston Martin Heritage Trust will be converting The Wooden Barn to show the history of the manufacturer including the earliest production Aston Martin known as A3 and also Green Pea which raced at Shelsley Walsh in 1922 in the hands of Count Louis Zborowski will be displayed alongside a current Aston Martin Rapide.

Anyone arriving in an Aston Martin will be directed to the forward area of the car park subject to space allowing.

This event is also a round of the Avon Tyres/TTC Group MSA British Hill Climb and Hill Climb Leaders Championship. Only two points separate the top two drivers in the country as the British Hill Climb Championship returns to Shelsley Walsh in Worcestershire for a season highlight event entitled Championship Challenge.

Local man and reigning champion Trevor Willis currently leads the standings with 193 points in his V8-powered OMS 28, followed very closely by three-times former champion Scott Moran of Ludlow, with 191 points in his Nicholson McLaren-engined Gould GR61X racing car.

The final result of the season will eventually depend on dropped scores from six of the 34 rounds, but, with the August meeting at Shelsley Walsh generally regarded as the premier event of the year, there will certainly be plenty to play for this weekend.

Scottish driver Wallace Menzies takes up third championship spot some 50 points behind in the running with his Cosworth-powered DJ Firestorm and Scott's father Roger takes up fourth position with 130 points in their shared Gould car.

A full entry list sees many interesting drivers returning to the sport including Robert Kenrick of Llangollen who will be driving a Caterham 7 rather than his former Force PC racing car and Nick Mann from Newbury in his amazing sounding - and performing - 1700cc turbocharged Mannic Sports Libre machine.

An entry of nearly 20 historic cars has been received from members of the 500 Owners' Association alongside over 25 examples of the Lotus marque competing in the Paul Matty Sports Cars Championship.

With such a wide variety of cars entered, including Mini Cooper, Audi Quattro, Elva, Ensign and Porsche to Brabham and Austin Healey, together with classes for around 60 single-seat racing cars, the event promises to be a great spectacle alongside the Aston Martin Centenary celebrations.

All the action starts at 9am on both days and tickets are available on the gate or to find further information, visit www.shelsley-walsh.co.uk
